Illinois
Central Railroad Depot
1718 Broadway Ave., Mattoon

This three-story
structure, built in 1916, features an unusual plan where passengers enter at
a higher street level and descend to the lower railroad track platform.
Although the station is still in use as a stop on the Chicago-New Orleans passenger
train route, the majority of the building is vacant and deteriorated.
The city purchased the building in 2001, following a Save the Depot campaign
that also raised money to replace the tile roof.
Restoration could be a potential catalyst for downtown redevelopment. However,
lack of funds is severely endangering this structure.
